Over the years, the world has watched some of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities battle with alcohol or drug dependency. As if overcoming addiction wasn’t difficult enough, these artists have done so in the spotlight with their every move showcased on television. Although there have been some tragic endings, we have also seen cases in which A-listers conquered their addiction triumphantly. Here are some of the role models that give us hope in the face of adversity:
Eric Clapton

Known as a legendary rock artist, Eric Clapton was quite the party animal in the 70’s which led to some serious drug and alcohol abuse. He has even admitted that he used to spend about $16,000 on heroin a week when his addiction was in full force. Clapton has been sober for 20 years now and has even held benefit concerts for a treatment center called Crossroads. Although he suffered with sobriety at first, Clapton claims that he is thankful for the valuable time he now has with his family and the inspiration it has given him to write new albums.

The Harry Potter star has admitted in the past that he used to struggle with a nasty alcohol habit. After showing up to the movie set drunk on numerous occasions, Radcliffe began to notice the effect alcohol had on his career and social life. He finally kicked excessive drinking to the curb in 2010 and has since landed roles such as Arthur Kipps in The Woman in Black and appeared in various indie films. He is now living a happy, full life that he regrets missing out on in the past.
Robert Downey Jr.

Perhaps one of the most renowned recovering addicts in Hollywood is Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. Having been arrested for drugs a number of times, Downey Jr. was put into rehab where he managed to escape twice, landing him a 36 month jail sentence. After more than 10 years of sobriety, Robert Downey Jr. is now one of the highest paid actors in show business and uses a combination of yoga, therapy, and meditation to practice self-restraint from drugs.
Naomi Campbell

Naomi Campbell is infamous for her bad temper and violent rages. She has been in trouble with the law countless times for assaulting employees including throwing her cellphone at her assistant and her housekeeper. When she appeared on Oprah in May of 2010, Campbell admitted to falling victim to drugs and alcohol which caused her embarrassing fits. Although Campbell admits that she is still a work in progress, she has been sober from drugs for six years and alcohol for more than a year and a half.
