Trauma-Informed Care

Specialized therapy to help you heal at your own pace

Trauma-informed care prioritizes creating a trusting relationship so that positive treatment outcomes and adherence are more likely. For every client, a trusting relationship with their therapists and treatment providers is essential to making progress in their mental health. At Casa Recovery, every client receives trauma-informed care as part of our high-quality, individualized treatment approach.

Many clients who require trauma-focused therapy are experiencing complex trauma — which occurs, usually at an early age, when a person is exposed to multiple traumatic events of an invasive and interpersonal nature. Repeated exposure often interferes with a person’s sense of self, forcing them to rely on unhealthy coping mechanisms, like substance use and addiction, to make it from day to day. Clients experiencing PTSD or trauma-related symptoms need a high level of trust and a strong therapy regimen to feel relief and break free of harmful coping techniques.

Modalities

Therapies used to treat trauma and PTSD

Having access to different therapy modalities is critical for clients to target the roots of their trauma, toxic thoughts and behaviors, and bodily responses to traumatic activations. One modality can’t accomplish all of these essential treatment goals, so at our trauma therapy in Orange County we use a combination of techniques to achieve the most positive outcomes.

Good mental health is “a state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and to cope with challenges.” When trauma interferes, people may struggle with daily tasks and interactions.

Two Core Modalities

Targeting trauma from the mind and the body

Different clients respond to different approaches. Two of the trauma modalities we rely on address activation from complementary angles — one reprocessing painful memories, the other restoring connection to the body.

Eye-Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing

EMDR is offered at the discretion of the clinical team once a client is deemed “ready.” A trained clinician asks the client to recall painful memories while following hand movements that encourage rapid eye movement, similar to sleep. In theory this stimulates the brain’s ability to process memory, allowing clients to see connections in their behaviors and empowering long-term change. Exposure therapy is often used alongside it, in safe and limited amounts, to desensitize triggers.

Somatic Therapy & Somatic Experiencing®

Somatic therapy is a holistic but clinically proven supplement to other traditional modalities. Through education and experiential practice, it helps clients understand that dysregulation comes from what happens in their bodies — and that being present and connected with the body can help them heal. Through Casa’s somatic-based group and therapists trained in somatic practices, clients can practice mindfulness and learn about their somatic experiences.

Our Approach

Treating trauma and PTSD at Casa Recovery

At our trauma therapy center in Orange County, every client receives trauma-informed care. While in treatment, we want clients to know they are collaborating on their mental health while developing skills around safety, choice, and trustworthiness.

Developing these skills requires creating boundaries with the client and maintaining and enforcing them for the duration of their stay. Creating boundaries is itself a safety feature, as a client’s trauma may have originated from a lack of boundaries with someone else.

Structure of Care

Individual and group therapy

At the beginning of their stay, clinicians spend up to three sessions simply getting to know the client and establishing boundaries and a foundation for a trusting relationship. Throughout each week, clients meet with their individual therapist twice, one-on-one, for an hour apiece; and every morning they meet with their individual therapist in a small group setting. Meeting often helps ensure treatment is as effective as possible and that connections are formed that motivate and inspire clients to succeed.

As a team, we meet every morning to make small treatment adjustments as a way to maintain quality of care and ensure we are meeting each client’s needs. We also hold a weekly clinical meeting to discuss each client, their treatment and progress, and to prioritize goals. Group therapy is an essential piece of recovery, especially for clients who have turned to maladaptive behaviors to cope. Gender-specific trauma groups ensure each client feels safe processing their trauma, and varied group settings — including groups split by demographics or diagnoses — help establish a validating, supportive community.

Beyond the Program

Support that continues after treatment

Healing from trauma doesn’t end at discharge. We build a support chain that reaches into a client’s life at home and involves the people who matter most.

Continuing Care in Orange County

After clients leave Casa Recovery, we work with their primary therapists to make sure they continue to receive treatment for long-term progress. To ensure clients have the resources and connections they need, we follow up with program graduates to keep the support chain strong and intact.

Our Family Program

Casa Recovery’s family program connects with family members or chosen friends within the first few days of a client’s stay. Families meet once a month for two hours with our clinical team to learn educational and supportive tools, and — when appropriate — for family therapy once a week. More family involvement builds a stronger support system and a healthier family dynamic for long-term recovery.

Dual Diagnosis

Treating trauma and co-occurring disorders

The strength of our trauma therapy program in Orange County depends on our dual-diagnosis treatment.

“Trauma and PTSD likely come with co-occurring disorders like Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Personality Disorders, Disordered Eating, and Substance Use Disorders.”

When this happens, it’s vital to receive simultaneous care for the underlying causes, the symptoms, and the unhealthy coping mechanisms. At Casa, we work with primary therapists, families, friends, and groups to create connections and healthy behavioral foundations that our clients can lean on for the rest of their lives.

For trauma-informed care that is individually tailored to meet client goals, come to Casa Recovery. Our compassionate professionals are here to create a treatment program that will give relief from mental health symptoms and the tools for long-term change.
