Addiction is a tricky disorder to deal with and can affect not just the addicted but the family and friends of those around them. Specifically, the role of spouse is one of the hardest to deal with. You want them to not be in pain, but you can’t stand watching them spiral deeper and deeper into addiction. We here at CASA Recovery see and understand your pain and have tips for how to cope with this tough time in you and your family’s life.
Be Patient with your Spouse.
While there have undoubtedly been things about their addiction that have caused you pain, patience is a virtue. More than likely the bad things they’ve done or said are a direct result of being under the influence of their addiction- the person you married wouldn’t have said or done these things. Don’t stand for violence but be patient in their recovery.
Recognize that Change is Coming.
In recovery, people change. Things that mattered once might not matter now, and ways of coping and handling stress and conflict might change. You will both need to actively engage in reacquainting with each other and learning how to best interact once the addiction has been stripped away.
Don’t Take Any Part of Addiction/Recovery Personally.
Nasty things can be said during addiction, and hard truths can be realized in recovery. Don’t take these spouts of anger or realizations to heart.
Above All, Take Care of Yourself.
Addiction can change people, and while you want the best for your partner, taking care of you and your well-being is extremely important. Be there for them as much as you can without compromising your own health and wellness.
