The Psychological Effects of Drug Abuse

The Psychological Effects of Drug Abuse

Understanding Drugs Affect Your Way of Thinking

The way drugs work is by making short and long-term changes to the brain. Naturally, the more a person continues to abuse drugs, the more significant the potential damage to their mental health. Sometimes people use drugs to help ease the symptoms of a mental illness like depression. In other cases, people develop the symptoms of psychological damage as a direct result of substance abuse. In both instances, these patients are known as dual-diagnosis as they have two co-occurring mental health conditions.

What are the Signs of Drug Abuse?

The psychological effects of drugs are visible through the behaviors of the person concerned. They may experience episodes of paranoia, depression, disproportionate anger, hallucinations and other mental health issues. In the majority of cases, the more a person becomes addicted to drugs, the more they tend to withdraw from loved ones. This isolation together with a change in personality is enough to show there are deeper issues that need addressing.

Some of the signs of drug abuse include the following:

  • Prescription drugs are being used even though they are no longer needed for health reasons
  • Progressively more of the drug is required to achieve the desired effects due to developing dependency
  • Withdrawal symptoms begin to emerge when the effects of the drug wear off. These symptoms can range from mild flu-like symptoms to more serious problems such as seizures and cardiac arrest
  • The person is preoccupied with obtaining and using drugs and continues to do so even though their lives may be falling apart as a result
  • They display uncharacteristic behavior as a result of substance abuse such as aggression, apathy, denial, confusion or over-excitement
